Customer: Legal Eagle Air Racing Association Program: Modification of a standard Pitts S-1 to a racing configuration. The work involved the design and fabrication of new, all graphite wings, the design and fabrication of a new cowl, the installation of a Dick DeMars IO-360 engine and exhaust, and several other small modifications slated to improve the airplane's performance. The airplane's new wings were a monocoque stressed-skin design that required virtually no internal structure. Although the result was more than twice as strong as the original wood/fabric wings, the final installed weight was seven pounds lighter.
Status: The program was successfully finished at
the end of 1993. The airplane won the Reno Gold Cup race in 1994 and
in 1997. |
